Plans for the project have been talked about for decades, and town officials say phase one, which focuses on the water and roadway improvements, is expected to last a few years.“It signifies just the start of something beautiful, but the end of a lot of work to get that momentum started,” said Stephanie Clarke, the lead developer of Killington’s tax increment financing (TIF) district, which will help partially fund the project through increased property taxes. One tower will be 84 stories high; the other, 74.The project, known as Forma, will sit near Roy Thomson Hall, the current home of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, on streets Mr. Gehry roamed in his youth, when the area was dominated by railway lines and warehouses.&nbsp; It began as a collaboration between Mr. Gehry and David Mirvish, the theater owner who Mr. Gehry knew from Mr. Mirvish’s days as a private art gallery owner. The original plan, unveiled a decade ago, was for three towers of more than 80 stories each, but was scaled back after backlash from the public and from some politicians. The final design preserves, rather than knocks down, the Princess of Wales Theatre and retains two of the four warehouses that would have been demolished in the first plan. Mr. Mirvish also sold the project to a consortium of developers.After Mr. Gehry posed for many photos of the groundbreaking, I met with him in an office being used by the developers. </div>Toronto architect Frank Gehry comes home to build his tallest building yetJane Stevenson, Toronto Sun&nbsp; Toronto architectural icon Frank Gehry chose his hometown to build his first residential tower in Canada, calling it “a work of art” on Wednesday.Gehry, 94, joined the development team of Forma – comprised of Great Gulf Group, Dream and Westdale Properties, and theatre kingpin David Mirvish — to celebrate the official start of construction of the project’s east tower on Duncan and King Sts. on Wednesday.“King St. is where I used to hang out as a kid — my grandma’s house was on Beverly St. a few blocks from here and so I knew the neighbourhood pretty well and I still felt roots here,” said Gehry at the ground-breaking ceremony. “I feel part of it, I couldn’t help it, you can’t avoid it.”The project calls for the construction of two towers with a public space, a dedicated space for OCAD and a free art gallery.
